Day of India at Mkhitar Sebastatsi Educational Complex
Dedicated to the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi
On the 22nd of February 2019, Indo-Armenian Friendship NGO in collaboration with “Mkhitar Sebastatsi” Educomplex and with the support of the Embassy of India in Armenia, organized a ‘Day of India’ in memory of Mahatma Gandhi.
The event, which was dedicated to the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was held in the “Mkhitar Sebastatsi” Educomplex to mark the launch of the celebrations dedicated to the most impactful and significant figure in the history of India.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi, as he is famously called, was born on October 2 in the year 1869. In India, his birthday is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti and 2019 marks his 150th birth Anniversary. Embassy of Indian in Armenia will be organizing a number of programs this year dedicated to him, some of which will be in collaboration with Indo-Armenian Friendship NGO.
During the commemorative event, the pupils of “Mkhitar Sebastatsi” Educomplex had an interactive session with H.E. Mr Yogeshwar Sangwan, Ambassador of India to Armenia, who spoke about Mahatma Gandhi, his philosophy and ideas. The students also shared their views and perspectives on Mahatma Gandhi.
His Excellency also awarded the winners of an Essay Competition “Be the change, that you wish to see in the world”. Three essays were chosen by Indo-Armenian Friendship NGO as winning entries, and a fourth essay, selected by the teachers of the “Mkhitar Sebastatsi” Educomplex got a special award. Harutyun Asatryan, Margarita Karaghanyan and Sona Papazyan bagged the first, second and third places respectively, while Edita Galstyan got the special award. All other participants were also awarded certificates.
A Painting competition with the theme “Inspired by Gandi” was also declared in the school and the winners will be awarded in our subsequent event.
Welcoming the guests to the “Mkhitar Sebastatsi” Educomplex, Mr Ashot Bleyan expressed his gratitude to His Excellency for visiting the school and laying the foundation for a long-term future cooperation. The “Mkhitar Sebastatsi” Educomplex conducts regular cultural and educational exchanges with pupils from various countries, and Mr Bleyan expressed his willingness to conduct the same with pupils and educational institutions from India.
H.E Mr Yogeshwar Sanghwan thanked the school and Indo-Armenian Friendship NGO for organizing the event. The Indian Embassy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science of the republic of Armenia, has identified a number of schools across the country, where talks about Mahatma Gandhi will be held. Although the “Mkhitar Sebastatsi” Educomplex was initially not on that list, H.E was glad that the students of the school also took part in the initiative.
Ms Lusine Toroyan, General Secretary of “Indo-Armenian Friendship” NGO thanked “Mkhitar Sebastatsi” Educomplex for the cooperation and expressed her gratitude to the Embassy of India for continuous support and encouragement.
The students also got a chance to learn Gujarati “Gangra” dance with dancers of “Shakti” group.
